Okay so I admit it...I am a lover of the "Bad-Boy".
Wow that was a bit harder to get off my chest than I thought it would be. :)
I have always and I guess in some ways will always love me some "bad-boy"
(Be it that the love of my life is the sweetest and the absolute best person ever).
But I regress; I am numerous other females have always been fond of the rebels, the beasts, the dark figures, the playboys, the emotionally untouchable, and any other way you can think of to describe those characters.
Why though? What do we find so irresistible about these men? Why do they steal our hearts and minds so completely? What is their lure?
I can only speak about myself when it applies to those questions. (Chime in if you have any theories.)
For me the lure of the so-called "bad-boy" started with Dracula. (Weird, I know; let me explain.)
My first real love was Dracula. It was Bela Lugosi, and it was love after first viewing. I'm not sure what it was about that character that caused my love of the bad-boy; but I have a few theories.
Maybe it was the allure of adventure, or the immortality, (where you would spend eternity with "the one"), or the "I can make this person into a better person" mentality, or the "you are the only thing that matters in the world to me" that the characters bring.
or......
My personal belief: I fall in love with these characters because its always a them against the world type personality
Which is pretty much what I have felt in life.
So I gave you my first love, now let me give you my latest, (just because I can, and I need something to make the point that the falling in and out of love with characters never really ends).
- Bitten is a book written by Kelley Armstrong
- It's about werewolves, (which I normally don't follow the mythology; I'm more of a vampire, mythological gods type person).
- One of the best shows I have watched in a while.
So you really should check it out on either Netflix, CTV, SyFy, or Space Channel.
So the characters in the book/show who have captured my heart and creative imagination are: Jeremy, (the alpha, recluse, artist), Clay, (the teacher, bully, always is right, self-absorbed jackass), and finally Nick, (the egotistical, rich playboy).
As you can see from those descriptions, all of the characters have some of the same qualities that I had mentioned earlier with Dracula.
So I leave you with this question. Do you find any of the above true for yourself?
